Unit One

Worrying actually has no benefit. It is okay to think about an issue and problem solve around it but worrying involves more than that. If you are preoccupied with trying to predict the future, imagining the worst thing will happen or having worries go around and around in your head, this is unhealthy. Fears can be paralyzing and can suck your mental and physical energy along with increasing your anxiety.

Some people believe that worrying is helping to avoid bad situations or come up with the answers to problems. This is not true. It is actually a waste of your time and energy. It would be more helpful to spend the time doing an activity with more positive results.

Unit Two

Understanding that trying to stop worrying or "thought blocking," usually makes worrying more intnese is helpful. Most people cannot just delete anxious thoughts from their brains. Trying to do this can make the thoughts stronger and more persistent. The reason is because it makes you pay more attention to the very thought you want to avoid. You will be constantly on guard for the worry thoughts and this very emphasis makes it seem even more important.

There is a different approach which involves postponing your worrying. Give your self a break from it. Instead of trying to stop or get rid of an anxious thought, give yourself permission to have it, but put it aside until later. You do have control of your mind.
